Infrared Surveillance Cameras: Features to Look For

Here are some of the questions you may want to ask before you purchase an infrared surveillance camera:

  • Will the infrared surveillance camera be a fixed mount camera?
  • Will the infrared surveillance camera have a rugged pan and tilt unit?
  • What sort of imaging system will the infrared surveillance camera have?
  • If you plan to use your infrared surveillance camera outdoors, you will want to make sure that the infrared components are protected from the elements. Some infrared surveillance camera come with an internal heater system to allow smooth operation in extreme temperatures. If you intend to use your infrared surveillance camera in extreme weather, this is an important feature to look for.
  • How will you control your infrared surveillance camera? Some models can be computer controlled for remote security applications. Some companies even provide software that enables users to control their infrared surveillance camera from command posts at various locations, anywhere in the world. Certain software systems can be customized to program the system’s infrared surveillance cameras to cover a designated area, or, when combined with intelligent surveillance software, set off an alarm when a certain motion or behavior is detected. Surveillance software will enable surveillance personnel to remotely operate multiple infrared surveillance cameras simultaneously.
  • Finally, how will your infrared surveillance cameras be powered? Some systems can be battery powered. This may be a good option for you if you need to use your infrared surveillance cameras for temporary surveillance in the field, or if you need to be mobile.

Wireless infrared surveillance cameras will allow you to monitor your home or office at any time of day or night, without the headache of stringing up lots of wires. These are perfect for outdoor surveillance settings where it would be cumbersome or too conspicuous to run lots of cables. Some wireless infrared surveillance cameras can transmit high frequency radio signals to send real-time high-resolution video to your TV or VCR from as far away as 200 feet. But be advised that some wireless infrared surveillance cameras may be prone to interference and/or interception. You don’t want your neighbors to be able to pick up on signals transmitting pictures of your living room when the lights are out. So be sure to look for a wireless infrared surveillance camera that has an encryption solution.

Whether you are looking for a wireless infrared surveillance camera, or a long-range infrared surveillance camera system, with maximized detection and recognition ranges, make sure the system you buy will integrate with your existing tracking or surveillance systems. Otherwise, you could be in store for a lot of work and trouble down the road. Also, with the movement toward increased surveillance in the post 9/11 world, many companies have rushed to market with their own infrared surveillance cameras. Be sure the camera system you buy has been field tested in different conditions. Also, it is best to work with a company that is established and reliable. The last thing you want is for your expensive infrared surveillance camera system to break down and find that the company that offered you the warranty is no longer in business.
