Spy Surveillance Equipment

Whereas once spy surveillance equipment was the mainstain of organizations like the CIA and the FBI, spy surveillance equipment is now available in large measure to the general public, and at increasingly reduced prices. What's more, spy surveillance equipment is now being used in places and for reasons that would make professional secret agents cringe. Americans, in ever-increasing numbers, are purchasing spy surveillance equipment to spy on their lovers, friends, husbands, wives, children, and, yes, even nannies. Are Americans more paranoid than ever before? Do they have more to hide, more to protect? Is the growing craze and fascination with spy surveillance equipment a sign of American's obsession with control? Or is it our obsession with gadgets? Whatever the case may be, the prevalence of spy surveillance equipment at bargain prices is making the world an ever-more "watched" place and turning privacy into a thing of the past.

What, if anything, should be done to curb the spread of spy surveillance equipment in the home and office? Can we learn to live with spy surveillance equipment recording every facet of our lives? Will we one day cease to be affected by it, and resign ourselves to the fact that, whether we like it or not, we are being watched? Or, is privacy a sacred right and privelege that is worth defending?

Undoubtedly, the many purveyors of spy surveillance equipment tout the virtues of their products. After all, spy surveillance equipment can be used to keep a watchful eye on the home when you're away, protecting your possessions, and maybe even your loved ones, from intruders. Parents who use spy surveillance equipment to keep a watchful eye on their nannies often feel a sense of peace and security, and can exercise greater protection of their children. Businesses that employ spy surveillance equipment to watch their employees can catch thieves in the act, save their businesses money, and, in some cases, prevent abuse of other employees on the job. So the benefits are endless, right?

Not according to Civil Libertarians. Many civil libertarians understand the virtues of the widespread deployment of spy surveillance equipment, but they worry about the unintended consequences of turning our society into something out of George Orwell's 1984. Civil libertarians worry about spy surveillance equipment being used for social control in ways that unwarranted by the constitution, about evidence from hidden spy surveillance equipment being misused in court (which has already happened), and about people's private information being misused wrongfully or illegally. Their concerns are noble and well-founded. The challenge, though, for the upcoming century, will be how to strike a balance between the benefits of using spy surveillance equipment, and the detriments of a spy surveillance equipment flooded society. Only time will tell...

There are some measures, however, that can be taken early on to make sure that the use of spy surveillance equipment is properly managed. For one thing, legal restrictions on how the footage from spy surveillance equipment can be used, how long it can be stored, and who can access it, are vital to preserving the constitutional right to privacy. State, federal, and local governments should take this opportunity to look at their laws governing the use of spy surveillance equipment, before the equipment becomes more prevalent than it already is. Future generations will thank us for it.
